Evan Stillwell Garrett

Apprentice Stores Technician

Evan Stillwell Garrett joined the department in 2017 as an Apprentice Stores Technician. He was our first Apprentice to complete an End Point Assessment when he obtained his level 2 Warehouse Operative Qualification and he is now working on and is close to completing his Level 2 Customer Service Qualification. Evan played a key role in maintaining the Department’s Stores function throughout the first government lockdown and subsequent department shutdown.

HR Officer Adam Philip spoke to Evan recently for National Apprenticeship Week 2021 (8-14 February).

Why did you choose to do an Apprenticeship?

I chose to do an Apprenticeship because I wanted to gain more communication skills.

What have you gained from your Apprenticeship - skills, experience etc?

Working in this Apprenticeship has definitely increased my confidence. I’ve learned skills that I would previously have struggled with but now it’s normal for me. I feel better about myself and words cannot explain how grateful I am for the people that helped me reach this level.

What advice would you give to someone who might be thinking about an Apprenticeship?

Make sure you know what you’re getting into but try and go for something that will challenge you. Learn about the job that you’re applying for, this will show that you’ve put effort in when you go to for you interview. It may be difficult at first but once you have adjusted to how things work, you’ll want to learn more.

What is the best thing about working for the Department of Engineering Science?

The best thing about the Department of Engineering Science is the people. They welcomed me from day one and they made me better than I was over 3 years ago. I’ve learned so much with the time I’ve spent with the department and I don’t have any regrets.
