We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Energy and Power Group at the Department of Engineering at Begbroke Science Park. The post is funded by DfID and is initially fixed-term until 30 November 2020, and may be extended subject to funds.


The successful candidate will join a world-class multi-institution team and be responsible for identifying and developing an integrated model for energy supply within the context of Sierra Leone, an evolving rural electricity sector. The post will be funded from DfID on the ‘Improving Sierra Leone’s Power System’ project.


You should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil in engineering with a specific focus in sustainable development. In addition, you will be familiar with appropriate social science tools to understand the preferences and needs of the communities within Sierra Leone, and the likely take up of appliances. You will have experience of working within Sierra Leone and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the energy system design with demonstrated ability to develop models of small scale energy systems. You should have the ability to manage your own academic research and associated activities, in addition to previously contributing to publications/presentations.


The successful candidate will work under Professor McCulloch and will be responsible for the identification of opportunities for technology, management and behavioural shifts to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness with which energy services are currently being used within Freetown, Sierra Leone. You will support the identification of opportunities for increasing efficiency and grid reliability, considering consumer reactions and tariff structures.
