AI Scientist Career Mobility Scheme
The UK also has a strong track record of training PhD students in AI and the interface of AI with healthcare. Such talent, as well as postdoctoral researchers are often unsure of next career steps and have spent their education and training in an academic setting. Some gain experience and insight of working in industry via internships for instance, but this is more common for PhD students and difficult to do for postdocs. The traditional perception is that if you take up a position in industry you are leaving academia for good.
This work package is researching current and possibly new models for post-doctoral level researchers to gain experience across both academic and industry settings during the postdoctoral period. This may result in new ways to strengthen collaboration between UK universities and industry in healthcare AI, encouraging the exchange of knowledge, skills, and ideas. By supporting closer links between these sectors, the scheme aims to benefit researchers, organisations, and society through the development of innovative AI solutions for healthcare.
The research study is being delivered in two phases. The first phase involves conducting interviews with AI industry professionals, academic researchers, and stakeholder groups to identify the barriers and opportunities associated with career mobility between academia and industry.
