Clinical Artificial Intelligence in Fetal Echocardiography
We have been part of the InnoHK-funded COCHE Centre since 2021. In the first phase of our research we have worked with 5 clinical sites to curate the CAIFE data library, which contains both retrospective and prospective fetal echocardiography scans, including around 2.500 congenital heart disease (CHD) scans, and image and video annotations. We have developed and published a series of video analysis foundational tools for spatio-temporal modelling and analysis from fetal echocardiography free-hand and sweep video. We have also published several congenital heart detection methods including video anomaly detection aimed at CHD screening.
A new five-year phase of the work commenced in late 2025 which aims to further develop and clinically validate AI-driven solutions for CHD detection and risk stratification in fetal ultrasound. Our approach builds on the CAIFE dataset, and is expanding to include novel echocardiographic biomarkers, and Al models that are suitable to be integrated into clinically deployable decision-support systems.
The project benefits from collaboration with five international clinical partner sites, which have collected large-scale datasets and continue to support the research through ongoing data collection and clinical expertise. We are actively looking for industrial partners to commercialise the work.
