Field Monitoring Systems

Field Monitoring Systems

Underground construction monitoring is still in its infancy, relying primarily on the development of empiricism from accumulated field experience. This is especially the case for the construction of large-diameter caissons and tunnelling, where complex soil-structure interaction (SSI) critically affects the construction process. There is an unmet need for robust monitoring to provide early warning of adverse responses (e.g. excessive soil-structure interface friction) to improve construction outcomes. This research involves the development of intelligent SSI monitoring systems by fusing novel optical-based sensors with Bayesian machine learning techniques. The new monitoring systems provide real-time, automated feed-back to site engineers, and the acquired data is used to provide robust validation of new design tools for industry.
