Support for Schools and Young People

Year 10 students on Uncover Engineering outreach programme in 2024

Support for Schools and Young People

Oxford University is committed to widening its intake of students from all backgrounds. At the Department of Engineering Science, we run various events and programmes in order to inform young people about what a degree in Engineering Science looks like, the benefits and how to best position themselves to make a competitive application as they progress through their education.

We work with a wide variety of students, but we particularly emphasise our support for those from underrepresented backgrounds. This includes, (but is by no means limited to) women interested in STEM courses, those from lower income backgrounds, students who have been/are in care environments or caring for someone else, first-generation students (those whose family did not go to university), children of Armed Forces personnel, the Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller groups and others who attend schools with a low history of progression to Oxford.

Within the Department, we offer outreach programmes such as our Uncover Programme, we also support wider Oxford University access initiatives such as UNIQ and the  Astrophoria Foundation Year, alongside running a continuous cycle of events in support of the other departments and the Colleges of the university.

Collegiate Outreach at Oxford University

The Oxford Colleges are linked to different regions of the UK for outreach and access support. If you are a teacher at a UK State school and would like to arrange a visit to Oxford University for your pupils, please contact your link college. If you would like to include Engineering Science in a visit please mention that to the College as part of the planning phase and we will work together to offer a tour of the laboratories or an Engineering Science Workshop where possible.

We unable to offer tours or workshops for individuals or private groups, only UK state schools that have approached their link college as part of a wider visit to Oxford University.

For a wider overview of outreach events across the university please see theĀ Oxford University Outreach Calendar.
