Early Career Fellowships

What is a Fellowship?

Fellowships are individual awards that enable researchers to devote their time to research, work on their own research project, and provide support for the awardee to develop as an independent researcher. They can be awarded at various career stages.

The information below is aimed at early career researchers who have received their PhD within the last eight years or less.

Applying for a Fellowship through the Department of Engineering Science

The Department typically supports applications to externally funded fellowships that cover full salary for the researcher and research expenses. Support for certain fellowships is considered on a case-by-case basis. We run internal selection processes for fellowships with institutional caps on the number of applications that can be submitted. All fellowship and funding applications must be processed through the Department’s Research Office and receive both departmental and institutional approvals. If you are interested in applying for a fellowship through the Department, please follow these steps:

1. Find a suitable scheme

Please ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria for any fellowship schemes you are considering and that your research project aligns with the aims of the scheme. A list of the major fellowship opportunities that we support is available below. Please note that the Department does not support the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships.

2. Identify a host academic

You will need to find a suitable permanent member of faculty (an academic with Associate Professor status or above ) to act as your host academic first and contact them to confirm whether they will support your application. Please see our list of academics. We cannot process applications that do not have the support of a permanent faculty member.

3. Intent to apply

When you have confirmed support from a host academic, you should ask your host academic to contact the Research Office on your behalf . Please include which scheme you intend to apply for, the funder deadline, and confirm that you meet all eligibility criteria.

Please be aware that our internal deadlines for your intent to apply are at minimum one month in advance of the funder deadline for fellowships, and up to six months earlier in cases where an internal selection process is required. Our internal deadlines can be found at Research News (sign-in required – please ask your host academic to check and confirm these with you).

4. Prepare your application

The Research Office team will advise you of key internal deadlines and work with you, alongside your host academic, to prepare your application for submission. Your application should be ready to submit at least two weeks prior to the funder deadline, unless otherwise advised, to allow sufficient time to obtain required institutional approvals. The Research Office team will inform you when your application has been approved and it can be submitted to the funder. In some cases, the central Research Services team at the University complete final submission of your application.
