A single treatment of autologous (i.e. using the patient’s own cells) stem cell or cell-based therapy will need around 100 million - 1 billion cells. Manual expansion of the original harvest of patient cells is challenging, in terms of reliability, quality and cost. Automated or semi-automated bioreactor systems have the potential to revolutionise the current cell practice and would make stem cell therapy more accessible to the public.
