Academic Lead
Dr Abhirup Banerjee, MStat PhD FDIRDI
- Royal Society University Research Fellow
Dr Abhirup Banerjee is a Royal Society University Research Fellow and Principal Investigator in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, where he founded and leads the MultiMeDIA Lab. He received BSc (Hons) and Master's degrees in Statistics before completing a PhD in Computer Science in 2017. His interdisciplinary training in statistics and machine learning underpins the research vision of the MultiMeDIA Lab. His research focuses on developing AI-powered cardiovascular digital twins through the integration of multimodal clinical data, including cardiac and vascular imaging, ECG, biomarkers, and population-scale health datasets. His work combines geometric deep learning, computational modelling, and statistical machine learning to advance personalised diagnosis, risk prediction, and image-guided interventions, with a particular focus on translating AI and computational modelling into real-world cardiovascular care.

Dr Mojtaba Lashgari, PhD

Dr Mojtaba Lashgari joined the University of Oxford in 2023 as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in the MultiMeDIA Lab. His research focuses on developing AI-driven tools for real-time analysis of multimodal cardiac imaging data to support clinical decision-making during cardiac catheterisation procedures. Prior to joining Oxford, he completed his PhD at the University of Leeds under the supervision of Professors Alejandro Frangi and Jürgen Schneider, where he developed computational frameworks for microstructure-sensitive diffusion MRI of the myocardium.

Ms Thalia Seale

Thalia Seale is a DPhil candidate in Engineering Science through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Health Data Science. Their research focuses on automated personalised 4D cardiac modelling for disease prediction. They hold a BSc in Mathematical Sciences from Durham University and an MSc in Statistical Science from the University of Oxford. Their broader interests include machine learning, statistical modelling, and the application of quantitative methods to healthcare and population health.
Dr Alexander James Sharp, MBBS

Dr Alexander Sharp is a DPhil candidate in Engineering Science at Somerville College and a Cardiology Specialty Registrar with a subspecialty interest in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac devices. He graduated from Imperial College London in 2015 with an MBBS and BSc (Hons) in Cardiovascular Sciences. His research investigates the relationship between left atrial geometry and electrical propagation patterns in atrial fibrillation, with the aim of improving patient selection and outcomes for catheter ablation therapy.
Mr Haobo Zhu

Haobo Zhu is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on automated analysis of X-ray angiography using deep learning for real-time cardiovascular interventions. Prior to joining Oxford, he completed an MEng in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London with First Class Honours and conducted research on automated segmentation of fetal echocardiography images.
Mr Mohammad Atwany

Mohammad Atwany is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. He completed BSc (Hons) and Master's degrees in Machine Learning in 2022. His research focuses on developing robust and generalisable machine learning methods for interventional cardiovascular imaging, with a particular emphasis on domain generalisation, domain adaptation, and trustworthy AI for real-world clinical deployment.
Mr Zhengda Ma

Zhengda (Darren) Ma is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at Kellogg College. He holds a Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from Fudan University and a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Information Engineering from Donghua University. His research focuses on geometric deep learning-based reconstruction of three-dimensional cardiac anatomy from magnetic resonance imaging, with interests in shape modelling and generative AI for cardiovascular applications.
Mr Krish Ramadurai

Krish Ramadurai is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at St Hilda’s College. His research focuses on the development of digital twins for predictive oncology and targeted therapeutic development, combining AI and computational modelling to advance precision medicine and preclinical drug discovery. Prior to commencing his DPhil, he completed an MSc in Nanotechnology for Medicine and Health Care at the University of Oxford with distinction, under the supervision of Dr Banerjee; this work on the predictive modelling of nanomedicines subsequently formed the basis of the Springer Nature book Machine Learning-Driven Rational Design in Nanomedicine. He previously completed master's degrees at Harvard University and Washington University in St Louis, and a bachelor's degree in Integrative Biology and Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Deyu Meng is a DPhil student in Engineering Science at St Catherine's College. He completed an MSc in Communications and Signal Processing at Imperial College London and a BSc in Communications Engineering at Shanghai University. His research focuses on AI-based reconstruction of three-dimensional vascular anatomy from two-dimensional imaging.
Mr Proshanto Chanda

Proshanto Chanda is a DPhil student in Engineering Science. His research focuses on multimodal cardiovascular risk prediction through the integration of retinal imaging and electronic health records. He is particularly interested in interpretable machine learning approaches that can uncover clinically meaningful relationships between retinal biomarkers and cardiovascular health.

Adrian McIntosh is an MRes student in Engineering Science at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME), University of Oxford, under the supervision of Professor Banerjee. He obtained his BSc (Hons) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Cape Town in 2025. Adrian is a FirstRand Foundation Scholar and an Allan Gray Fellow. His research interests lie in multimodality and representation learning in cardiovascular disease, with a focus on medical imaging and modelling health data to address challenges relevant to low- and middle-income countries.

Aminah Iman Dixon is a fourth-year Engineering Science student whose master's project focuses on interpretable multi-task learning frameworks for cardiovascular disease diagnosis using retinal imaging. Her work investigates vector-quantised variational autoencoders and other generative models to improve both predictive performance and clinical interpretability.

Annika Michael is a current 4th year undergraduate student in the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. Her research is focused on spatiotemporal deep learning for the detection of cardiac diseases in cardiac ultrasounds with a focus on ejection fraction prediction. This is part of her 4th year research project supervised by Dr. Abhirup Banerjee.

Charlotte Richardson is a fourth year undergraduate reading Engineering Science at Wadham College. Her master’s thesis focuses on developing multimodal deep learning frameworks that integrate cardiac MRI and 12-lead ECG signals to improve the detection and prediction of myocardial infarction.

Jianing Qu completed her MEng in Engineering Science at Balliol College, University of Oxford. Her fourth-year project focused on diffusion models for three-dimensional cardiac anatomy generation, supervised by Dr Abhirup Banerjee. She graduated with a distinction, achieving a mark of 79%.
Mr Mingze Lyu

Mingze Lyu is an undergraduate Engineering Science student at Mansfield College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on geometric deep learning approaches for large-scale three-dimensional and four-dimensional cardiac modelling using UK Biobank imaging data. He joined the MultiMeDIA Lab as an EPSRC-funded summer research intern under the supervision of Dr Abhirup Banerjee.

Ms Yasmine Boukhriss

Yasmine Boukhriss is a final-year Mechanical Engineering student and Medical student, currently pursuing a dual degree. She is a visiting (recognised) student from the Université de Montpellier, France, supported by the Maison française d’Oxford (MFO), and currently pursuing her Master's thesis under the supervision of Dr Abhirup Banerjee. Her work focuses on the compressibility of the myocardium and its role in improving the interpretability of cardiac MRI. She studies cardiac motion over time to better understand the mechanical properties of the heart and their clinical relevance.

Yiying Wang is a DPhil student in the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. His research is focused on 3D Coronary Artery Tree Reconstruction from Two Non-Simultaneous Angiographic Projections using Deep Learning. Yiying received his BSc (Hons) in Computer Science and MSc in Data Science and Machine Learning from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and University College London, respectively. Yiying joined the University of Oxford as a DPhil student in October 2021. Yiying's research interest spans Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science, focusing on various topics including Biomedical Image Analysis, Computer Vision, Deep Learning, etc.
Mr Mohanad Alkhodari

Alkhodari’s research interests include machine/deep learning, biosignals and bioimaging, and healthcare informatics. His current research focuses on developing artificial intelligence tools to leverage personalised healthcare in clinical practice, particularly for cardiovascular assessment. The ultimate goal of his DPhil project is to understand the hypertension progression landscape over the life course with the help of evolutionary AI-based models and large-scale multi-organ multi-modality data.
