Linear Motors Research

A novel, moving magnet linear motor is being investigated. It has a simple geometry and makes efficient use of the magnetic material. The aim is to develop a motor that is compatible with clearance seal technology and can be mass produced at very low cost. A successful prototype has demonstrated that the principle is sound. Detailed modelling is now underway which will allow the system to be optimised. There are many possible applications in high reliability, oil-free linear compressors for refrigeration and other duties.
