Large Diameter Caissons

Monolithic reinforced concrete caissons have a wide range of geotechnical applications including underground storage, attenuation and treatment tanks for the water and wastewater industry. The construction process involves a complex system of concurrent casting of the concrete walls and excavation of the soil inside and beneath the caisson thereby allowing the caisson to sink into the ground under self‒weight. This research aims to improve current understanding of soil penetration resistances during the sinking process using advanced numerical modelling, laboratory testing and field monitoring of live construction projects.
