Soil Element Testing

The advanced element testing laboratory contains number of devices that are listed under the facilities tab.

Past research contributions include the investigation of sand at low stress levels subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. Current developments involve the cyclic simple shear behaviour of glacial till, stiffness estimates of dense sand and stiff clay using the resonant column, the cyclic triaxial testing of sands at small strains, and the monotonic and triaxial testing of sands under conditions of partial drainage. These projects feed into the development of practical pile design methodologies that is currently ongoing, involving collaborations from leading industry partners (see PICASO for further detail).

Research in this area is led by Prof. Chris Martin, Prof. Byron Byrne, and Prof. Orestis Adamidis.
