About the role


We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the University of Oxford as an Apprentice 3D Printing Technician with the Department of Engineering Science.


The 3D Printing Laboratory, established in 2019, supports students and staff in the Department of Engineering Science in the use of 3D printing to make prototype models and test components for use in a wide range of engineering applications to.


You will be trained to assist with the smooth and efficient running of the laboratory, including the use and maintenance of 3D printers and associated equipment, and in CAD (Solidworks) and 3D printing software. Your role will involve assisting with student project work and in the delivery of labs and workshops as well as undertaking routine preparation and maintenance of 3D printers.


About the apprenticeship


You will be required to complete a 42 month training programme that will cover all aspects of the role and will be delivered through in-house training, as well as day-release or other distance learning methods delivered by Abingdon and Witney College.  As part of this role, you will undertake an Intermediate Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship and then progress onto an Advanced Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship (Product Design and Development Pathway) which is within the Engineering and Manufacturing sector and you will gain a Level 3 Engineering Qualification.

For this apprenticeship, you will work at the Department of Engineering Science, in central Oxford. As part of your apprenticeship, you will be required to attend Abingdon and Witney College 3 days a week in the first year and one day a week in subsequent years.


In total, it will take 3.5 years to complete all elements of the apprenticeship, with support from the Department, University, and College throughout.

About you


You will be passionate about starting your career in engineering and excited about the opportunity of becoming an apprentice at the University of Oxford. You may be starting your career or you may be looking for a career change. 


To complete the apprenticeship you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE Maths and English. If you did not achieve these grades, do not let that put you off from applying as you can study Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship giving you the equivalent qualifications needed. To help check that you have the potential to achieve these, Abingdon and Witney College will ask you to complete a short initial assessment during the application process. There are also government residency requirements for Apprenticeship funding which the Training Provider will be able to advise on.
