We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join the Bioelectronics research group at the Department of Engineering Science (Headington).  The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is fixed-term for up to 30 November 2025.


The researcher will develop prototype closed-loop bioelectronic systems for interfacing with the nervous system. The emerging field of “bioelectronics” provides a novel intervention by sensing and electrically stimulating the nervous system based on physiologically-inspired principles. In addition to providing core therapeutic stimulation, we can also embed additional scientific instrumentation into the device. In collaboration with academic and industry partners, the research prototypes will be deployed in first-in-man clinical trials to treat neurological disorders with a particular emphasis on disorders of consciousness. Accordingly, you will love the idea of working on instrumentation systems that help understand the brain and identify improved mechanisms for treating disease.


It will also be crucial that you are able to work to tight deadlines and relish the opportunity implicit in clinical trials and demonstrations.  You will understand the importance of documentation, standardisation, coding styles and unit testing for medical devices that touch human subjects.  Being a part of a growing engineering team who will be immersed in a research environment, you will need to work closely with academics, post-docs and research students.   The Research Assistant will be excited about the idea of integrating state of the art algorithms and neural hardware to produce fully operating, autonomous neural interface platforms that operate in the real world.


You should possess a relevant PhD (or be near completion) in fields such as biomedical, electrical or systems engineering and have experience of working with clinical engineering systems used in hospitals. ; You must also have proven competence in programming methods in Matlab, Python, C#, or similar languages; experience with designing, building and validating real-time closed loop systems with embedded processors, as well as evidence of working well as part of a busy multidisciplinary research team.
