Description
The University of Oxford Department of Engineering Science one of the largest research and teaching departments in the university and is a world-renowned institution with a reputation for excellence, with strong links to Computer Science, Materials Science and Medicine. We are dedicated to addressing global challenges through cutting edge research and innovation, from reducing carbon emissions to helping develop vaccines. The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology. The role
The department is seeking to appoint a Facilities Support Operative. This is a new role within the Facilities Management and Stores team, reporting to the Assistant Facilities Manager.
The work is varied — setting up rooms, driving packages for the stores team across the city, litter picking — and no two days are quite the same. As the day-to-day janitor and porter you will help keep the department's buildings safe, clean and well-presented — covering everything from porterage and post to setting up rooms, carrying out routine maintenance checks, and supporting fire drills. As a stores driver you will plan and carry out deliveries between departmental sites, maintaining vehicle records and loading safely. You will also provide ad hoc reception cover, meeting and greeting visitors, managing room bookings and parking permits, and operating the access control system.
The Department occupies around 20 buildings within the city and surrounding areas, and this role will be required to work across all of them. You will be based at the Thom Building on Parks Road. This role requires a significant amount of time on your feet and a positive, can-do attitude. A friendly and approachable manner is essential, as is the flexibility to support colleagues and building users wherever needed.
What we are looking for
You must hold a full, valid UK driving licence and be physically able to undertake repeated manual handling duties in accordance with health and safety requirements. You will need basic IT skills (including Outlook and Excel), a strong regard for health and safety, and the ability to work independently and unsupervised. A professional, dependable approach and good customer service skills are essential.
Experience of driving in busy urban environments, previous experience in a similar facilities or porterage role, and a willingness to join the call-out rota are all desirable.
About the team
The Facilities team consists of a General Facilities Manager, an Assistant Facilities Manager, an Administrator, an Administration Assistant/Receptionist (PM), a Receptionist (AM) and a janitor/porter. The team is based in the Thom Building and operates across all departmental buildings.
