We are seeking a part-time Laser Safety Officer (18.75 hours/50% FTE) to join the Department of Engineering Science in central Oxford. This is a permanent post.
You will work with the existing Departmental Laser Safety Officer (DLSO), to ensure that laser systems and intense light sources are setup and used in accordance with established safety procedures and that the operators are suitably trained. A key part of the job is to provide advice to researchers on the control of hazards associated with their equipment.
You will provide advice during the procurement process for lasers, and ensure that appropriate records are kept of laser registration, risk assessment and training. You will make regular inspections of laser facilities, and associated equipment, provide written reports of findings and recommendations, and provide training in the safe use of lasers.
You should be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (e.g. physics, electronics or opto-electrical engineering) or equivalent experience in laser technology. Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations in a laboratory environment in a relevant subject or have equivalent experience, laser technology skills, and have strong knowledge and experience of Health and Safety regulations in a laboratory environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required along with the ability to organize your own workload and to take the initiative as appropriate.
