The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint an Associate Professor of Engineering Science (Civil Engineering) from 1 July 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will will work at the Department of Engineering Science (OX1 3PJ) and will be offered a Non-tutorial Supernumerary Fellowship at Harris Manchester College under arrangements described in the Job Description. The salary will be on a scale currently from £50,300 to £67,541 per annum plus additional benefits as indicated in the Job Description. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post-holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.


This appointment will add further strength to the Department’s internationally-renowned research in civil and offshore engineering and its applications. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for and obtain external funding to enable development of independent research as well as to develop links with other departments across the University, primarily in other Departments in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division.


The successful candidate will be expected to engage in original research in the field of civil engineering,  to secure research funding and engage in the management of research projects, to supervise research students and to give three hours per week of tutorials during the eight weeks of the undergraduate term. They will have a strong background applicable to research in any of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering or civil engineering fluids, including a doctorate in the subject or a cognate discipline, a proven research record of high quality at international level, significant future research potential, and the ability to attract research funding and develop an independent programme of research.


They will have the ability to teach effectively, both at undergraduate and graduate levels, and have excellent interpersonal skills for undertaking tutorial teaching.
