Postdoctoral Research Associate in Geospatial Energy System Modelling

Salary

Standard Grade 7: £36,024 - £40,521 per annum

Closing date

Description

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the interdisciplinary project ‘Strategic Hydrogen Integration for Effective Low-Carbon Development (SHIELD)’ in Ukraine, led by Professor Stephanie Hirmer (Energy and Power Group) and Professor Rene Bañares-Alcántara (OXGATE Group) at the Department of Engineering Science, Osney Mead.  The post is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and is fixed-term until 31 March 2026

The postholder will play a critical role in supporting Ukraine's Energy Independence and Decarbonization Strategy. This initiative is a crucial element of the country's efforts to transition to green hydrogen and ammonia as part of its broader energy security goals. Responsibilities will include the development of location-specific decision support tools for the production and integration of green hydrogen and ammonia into Ukraine's energy system using geospatial modelling tools. This work is pivotal as Ukraine aims to enhance its energy infrastructure resilience and align with the Central European Hydrogen Corridor.

The postholder will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of policy experts, whole system energy modellers, and finance researchers. Your focus will be on incorporating socio-economic factors and existing infrastructure into the geospatial models to ensure the solutions are inclusive and effective. This role involves engaging with local stakeholders and policymakers to ensure the project's alignment with national energy strategies and contributing to initiatives that promote gender equality and social inclusion.

You should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be near completion), with the possibility to underfill at Grade 6 (£32,332 - £38,205 per annum) if you hold a relevant degree/Masters and working towards a PhD/DPhil, together with relevant experience.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Rene Bañares-Alcántara (email: rene.banares@eng.ox.ac.uk)
