Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Visual Mapping and Change Detection

Salary

Description

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Dynamic Robot Systems Group, part of the Oxford Robotics Institute and the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. The post is funded by United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) as part of the ACORN IAA and is for 12 months.

The researcher will develop visual mapping and change detection algorithms – specifically focusing on “360 cameras” as the main sensor modality. The works will develop multi-session visual SLAM pipelines and feed-forward reconstruction (e.g. VGGT, MapAnything) to project rich 3D reconstructions of urban and industrial environments. The second axis of work will develop visual change detection – both at on object-level and geometric-level - using Visual Language Models such as CLIP, DINOv3 and SAM2.

A key focus of the work will be creating actionable output which end users can use to determine the state of a physical asset or facility over time. Accordingly this project will involve collaboration with our project collaborator, AtkinsRealis.

The researcher will also contribute to ongoing collaborations such as with SNU Korea (Kim), Uni. of Pretoria (De Villiers) and Georgia Tech (Dellaert).

The researcher should have a PhD/DPhil in robotics, computer vision, machine learning or a closely related field. You have an excellent academic track record in topics relevant to robot perception. A specific focus on visual inertial odometry (VIO), mapping (SLAM) and 3D reconstruction is desirable.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Maurice Fallon (mfallon@robots.ox.ac.uk).
