We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Materials Characterisation to work at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford) with Professors Hofmann, Moody and Wilkinson. The post is funded by EPSRC and is fixed-term until 30 September 2022.

The goal of this UK-US project is to explore combined liquid lead corrosion and irradiation embrittlement, a long-standing challenge for lead-cooled fission reactor concepts that promise best efficiency. Your role will be to characterise material structure and chemistry from the macro to the atomic scale to identify what mechanisms control degradation, concentrating on synergistic corrosion-irradiation effects.

You should have a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject (or be near completion); have experience in the use of focussed ion beam sample prep and transmission electron microscopy. Experience of atomprobe tomography, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and a background in irradiation damage are desirable. An excellent publication record, willingness to travel for work, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a research project are also essential.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to

You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with this position), CV and the details of three referees.

Only online applications received before 12.00 midday on Monday 23 September 2019 will be considered.
