Description

We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join the Oxford Thermofluids Institute at the Department of Engineering Science.  The post is funded by Rolls-Royce for an initial fixed-term of 12 months, which will likely be extended subject to confirmation of further funding.

This project examines how heat exchangers behave when they are installed in an aircraft. The air side flow can be highly non-uniform. This affects both the heat transfer and the aerodynamic performance of the heat exchanger; both will impact the system performance. We will examine this behaviour experimentally, and use numerical / analytical methods to model the behaviour.

You will be responsible for the commissioning of a new experimental facility to test oil-to-air heat exchangers in non-uniform flow. You will run a series of experiments to understand the performance with different conditions. These will include aerodynamic probe traverses. In addition you will run complementary CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) calculations to model the performance.

A satisfactory basic Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required for this role as the project deals with UK-OFFICIAL information with Rolls-Royce.

You should possess a PhD/DPhil, or be near completion. There is a possibility to underfill at Grade 6 ( £32,332 - £38,205 per annum) if candidate has relevant experience, holds a suitable degree/Masters and is working on PhD/DPhil.

You will need experience in running aerodynamic and/or heat transfer experiments. Experience of CFD is also desirable. Good time management and organisation will also be essential to deliver the project.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof John Coull (john.coull@eng.ox.ac.uk)
