Engineering teaching and research takes place at Oxford in a unified Department of Engineering Science whose academic staff are committed to a common engineering foundation, which includes research and study in most branches of the subject. The Department employs about 120 academic staff and around 250 research staff, all supported by an experienced team of teaching support staff, administrative staff and technicians.


We are recruiting a fixed term HR Officer (secondment cover) to support the department in a full range of generalist HR activities.

About the Role


We are seeking a full-time HR Officer to join the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford) on a fixed term basis until 30 March 2025.


As part of a HR team you will provide a complete HR administrative service to the staff within the Department of Engineering Science, supporting the full employee life-cycle. There is a strong recruitment focus to the role but you will be expected to provide a range of generalist HR support, including visa applications, visitors, and advice on University processes.


You will build effective working relationships with academics and other staff, performing and overseeing end to end processes such as the co-ordination of recruitment and managing absence. You must be able to manage a busy and varied workload and cope with changing priorities.


Along with the HR Operations Manager and other HR team members, you will ensure that the department is adhering to best practice, and you will be encouraged to contribute to process improvement via both short and long term HR projects.


This post would be ideal as a secondment opportunity.



About You


You will be educated to at least A Level (or equivalent), with a CIPD qualification beneficial. Previous generalist HR experience is essential, with experience in a fast paced and varied working environment preferable.


You should have excellent problem solving skills, and you should be able to identify the most appropriate method in order to resolve any issues. Good team working, communication, and IT skills are vital, with experience using HR systems preferable. You must be well organised with good attention to detail and the ability to work on your own initiative. Previous experience working in HR within the University of Oxford is desirable.
