Description

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Translational Bioelectronics group, led by Prof Tim Denison, at the Department of Engineering Science (Old Road Campus Research Building).  The post is funded by EPSRC and is fixed-term for up to 24 months.

The GLUTRONICS project seeks to enhance the quality of life of the millions worldwide affected by chronic conditions, and reduce the incidence of the associated premature deaths, by advancing the progress on implantable bioelectronics for personalised therapy though implantable long-lasting, lightweight and miniature power sources. The postdoctoral researcher will develop a chronic implantable system for characterizing the glucose-powered fuel cell.

Your Specific Duties include:

•         Develop an electrochemical interface for chronic fuel cell monitoring in vivo including common electrochemical characterization methods.

•         Design and manufacture an micromachined interface between the fuel cell and the implantable instrumentation package.

•         Implement real-time signal processing and post-processing techniques to improve recording fidelity.

•         Design and test hardware on the bench to ensure robustness prior to implantation, including validating methods in virtual in vivo environments.

•         Collaborate with engineers to refine fuel cell specifications and support in vivo experiments.

You should hold a relevant PhD/DPhil (or be close to completion), along with relevant experience. You must also have expertise in precision physiological recording, signal processing, and artefact suppression techniques, as well as proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or similar for real-time data analysis. Knowledge of implantable neural interfaces, electrophysiology, and stimulation technologies is also essential.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Tim Denison (email: timothy.denison@eng.ox.ac.uk).

For more information about working at the Department, see www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/.

Only online applications received before midday on 4 June 2025 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
