Oxford University celebrates successful Open Days

Highlighting Engineering opportunities for thousands of prospective students

Oxford University celebrates successful Open Days - taster lecture

As part of Oxford's recent University-wide Open Days, held on 26 and 27 June, we welcomed thousands of prospective students and their families to our historic campus, providing them with a glimpse into the life of an undergraduate student as well as the vibrant engineering research at Oxford.

The event was a resounding success with over 1,800 visitors exploring the department's facilities, lecture theatres and labs, as well as engaging with our academic and student administration staff and student ambassadors. The visitors had the opportunity to attend a variety of taster lectures, research showcases, and lab demonstrations.

Highlights included taster lectures on engineering innovations in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Interactive lab visits and demo sessions allowed attendees to experience first-hand the blend of innovation and tradition that characterises Oxford. Visiting labs such as Software lab, Energy lab, Control lab, Thermofluids lab, they gained a valuable insight into the engineering projects, activities and daily life of an engineering student. The open days were complemented by informative Q&A sessions where students as well as parents could get answers to their questions about the application process, financial aid, and other queries.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the organisation of the event and the comprehensive information provided. A student from Sir John Deane’s remarked,

‘‘I came to the Open Day because the students and the facilities at Oxford are something to aspire to and it’s in the top two universities, which everyone aspires to go to.’’

Another student from Cheltenham said, ‘‘I really wanted to visit the Department of Engineering Science because I want to be a Chemical Engineer in the future. I had a great chance to meet some of the students, talk to them, and ask some questions in the Q&A sessions. The Open day was a really great opportunity to learn about the modules in the course, and the general nature of the first two years and the specialisations as well.’’

Direct interactions with academics and current students, helped the visitors get a feel for the community at the department.

The next University-wide Open Day will be held on Friday 20 September. We look forward to welcoming even more prospective students to explore what our department has to offer. This upcoming event aims to build on the success of our recent Open Days, offering a similar array of engaging and informative sessions. We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to making these Open Days a success. We are proud to showcase the excellence and diversity of our university and department and look forward to seeing many of more enthusiastic visitors again in September.
