Mr

Freddie Lunn

DPhil Student

Keble Triangle

COLLEGE: Pembroke College

Freddie is a DPhil student who joined the Thermal Propulsion Systems Research Group in Autumn 2024. Supervised by Prof. Konstantina Vogiatzaki, he is researching the solidification of cryogenic fluids for energy and transport applications. This research involves integrating computational fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics and machine learning to produce numerical models of multiphase cryogenic fluid behaviour at multiple scales. Potential applications of this research include modelling of hydrogen fuel interactions and cryogenic carbon capture.

Prior to Oxford, Freddie achieved a First-Class MEng in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton. His work at Southampton included a dissertation on data-driven reduced-order modelling of air flows and a final-year group project to design, build and test a novel connection mechanism for CubeSats.

Research Interests

  • Fluid dynamics (including analysing multiphase and cryogenic flows)
  • Data-driven numerical modelling (including use of computational fluid dynamics and machine learning)
  • Propulsion systems (including those in the aerospace industry)
  • Sustainable energy solutions (including carbon capture and alternative energy vectors such as hydrogen)
