Biography
Dr Jalal Al-Lami is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, working at the interface of advanced materials and experimental mechanics. He leads the Applied Research team within the Impact and Shock Mechanics Laboratory (ISML), collaborating with major industrial partners across aerospace and defence, including Rolls-Royce plc, on strategic research programmes. His research focuses on understanding the strain-rate and temperature-dependent responses of materials by combining a broad array of mechanical testing platforms with advanced diagnostics and microstructural characterisation techniques.
Jalal received his PhD in Materials from Imperial College London in 2023. Prior to joining the Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering Group at Oxford, Jalal worked in the advanced manufacturing industry, where he led cross-sector research and industrial programmes in metal additive manufacturing. His work focused on developing processing strategies for advanced engineering alloys to improve mechanical performance and enable lighter, higher-performance components. This contributed to innovation programmes delivered for leading Silicon Valley technology companies. He continues to have a particular interest in additively manufactured metals, with a focus on nickel-based superalloys that are ubiquitous in the aerospace and power generation industries.
