Biography
Dr. Joram J. van Rheede is an EPSRC Open fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (Department of Engineering Science) and an associate group leader at the Brain Network Dynamics Unit (Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences) at the University of Oxford.
After obtaining a BA in cognitive sciences from Utrecht University in 2007, Joram joined the University of Oxford in 2008 for an MSc + DPhil programme in Neuroscience, defending his doctoral thesis on the role of sensory experience in visual system development in 2013. Following postdoctoral projects on sensory prosthetic technology and neural sensory processing, Joram joined the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit to work with Prof. Andrew Sharott in 2020 and joined the Brain Engineering lab to work with Prof. Tim Denison in 2023.
Since 2026 he is an EPRSC Open fellow, with a research programme focusing on the interaction of deep brain stimulation therapy and sleep, and the long-term operation of closed-loop deep brain stimulation algorithms. This includes clinical studies with deep brain stimulation patients as well as preclinical studies in disease models.
Alongside his research appointments, Joram is a Lecturer in Psychology at Christ Church, providing tutorials to undergraduate students of Experimental Psychology, Psychology Philosophy and Linguistics, and Medicine.

Understanding the interaction between therapeutic neuromodulation and brain state on clinically relevant time scales
Estimation of physiological / pathological state from neural and multi-modal recordings
Characterising and improving signal quality in multi-day neural recordings in patients (out of the clinic/lab)
Long-term (24/7) operation of closed-loop algorithms for neuromodulation
Neurotechnology for long-term closed loop and sleep-aware therapy research
