Zi Jian (Shawn) Lau

Mr

DPhil Student

COLLEGE: St John's College

Biography

Zi Jian (Shawn) is a BM-Doctoral student intercalating his Graduate Entry Medicine studies at the University of Oxford to pursue a doctorate in Cancer Science under the supervision of Dr Dario Carugo, Professor Claire Edwards, Dr James Edwards and Professor Eleanor Stride. Shawn completed his bachelor’s degree in Cancer Biomedicine at University College London.

Shawn’s project will focus on developing an ultrasound-activated delivery platform for osteolytic and osteoblastic bone metastases, with an interest in spinal tumours. Clinically, Shawn is currently interested in neurosurgical oncology and interventional oncology.

Awards and Prizes

Laidlaw Scholars Leadership & Research Programme (2020 – 2023)

Other roles

Honorary Research Fellow at Division of Surgical and Interventional Sciences, University College London.

Research Interests

Shawn’s research interests lie in leveraging bioengineering approaches to enhance the efficacy of conventional therapeutics by improving delivery precision, minimising systemic toxicity, and maximising clinical outcomes. He is particularly interested in ultrasound-mediated drug delivery systems, with a focus on developing multifunctional nanoparticles capable of simultaneously targeting multiple aspects of the tumour microenvironment.

By integrating diagnostic and therapeutic functionalities, he hopes to one day enable spatiotemporally controlled, patient-tailored treatment modalities that optimise therapeutic response while reducing adverse effects.
