The next Engineering Horizons lecture will take place on Wednesday 19 November from 18:15 – 21:00 at Savoy Place (The IET), London:

Engineering the quantum future

The lecture will focus on the Quantum related research taking place in the department with talks from Professor Dominic O’Brien, Professor Natalia Ares, Dr Sarah Thomas and Dr Zhenyu Cai.

Abstract:

Quantum technologies are moving rapidly from theory to reality, promising to transform the way we compute, communicate, and sense the world. At their core, these technologies harness the principles of quantum mechanics to unlock capabilities that are impossible with classical systems. Quantum computers aim to solve problems that are intractable on today’s fastest supercomputers, while quantum communication networks promise fundamentally secure information exchange and a foundation for a future “quantum internet.”

This talk will explore what quantum technologies are, why they matter, and how they could transform industries ranging from medicine and energy to finance and national security. The talk, given by four academics in the Department of Engineering Science, will highlight the pivotal role of engineering in bringing these ideas out of the lab and into the real world. By exploring current breakthroughs and future challenges, we will see why quantum technologies are among the most exciting frontiers of science and technology today, and why engineers will play a leading role in shaping this emerging quantum future.
