DPhil student receives two awards at the 2026 Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) Conference
Podium Institute DPhil student Dr Sheikh Momin received two awards at the 2026 Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) Conference in Harrogate this April, held in partnership with the British Neurosurgical Research Group (BNRG)
Dr Sheikh Momin’s presentation was awarded both Best Overall Presentation and Best Trauma Oral Presentation, an outstanding achievement at this nationally recognised scientific meeting, which hosts twice-yearly gatherings for the neurosurgery community. The conference featured more than 100 oral presentations, with just six selected for the trauma session, underscoring the significance of this achievement.
Widely regarded as a leading forum for the UK neurosurgery community, the SBNS & BNRG Conference has a longstanding focus on translating high quality research into meaningful clinical impact.
At the conference Sheikh presented his work entitled Objective biomarkers of sports‑related concussion and recovery: protocol for the Podium Multimodal Concussion Study. The research protocol for this study outlines an innovative approach to understanding sports‑related concussion by integrating fluid biomarkers, pitch‑side MRI, and wearable technology data, collected both pre‑season and in‑season. This acknowledgment from the SBNS & BNRG reflects the quality of Sheikh’s work and the collaborative effort behind the Podium Multimodal Concussion Study.
The study, led by Professor Constantin Coussios,OBE FREng FMedSci, has been featured in the media as the world’s first fully independent multimodal investigation of concussion in rugby, combining mobile MRI scanning with a suite of advanced technologies to improve diagnostic accuracy. This multimodal methodology aims to identify objective measures that could significantly improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and understanding of concussion and recovery.
“It was great to share our work with the UK neurosurgery community, highlighting the potential impact of our study and opening discussion around its applicability to the broader traumatic brain injury population.”
Dr Sheikh Momin
