Biography
Professor Whyte is a recognized leader in fusion research whose research in the magnetic confinement of plasmas sets us on an innovative and faster path to producing fusion energy. He is the incoming CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, based at the Culham Fusion Center, overseeing the UK's effort to develop and commercialize fusion energy.
He has published over 390 articles on a wide range of fusion science and technology. He has been one of the leaders of the SPARC project, a collaboration between Commonwealth Fusion Systems, which he co-founded, and MIT to design and build a high-field fusion device to demonstrate net energy production. Many of the technology approaches underpinning the high-field approach to fusion energy, including SPARC, were formed over the last decade with students in his fusion design class: utilizing magnets from high-temperature superconductors, demountable magnets for modular assembly and maintenance, and innovative nuclear technologies for robust energy removal.
Dr. Whyte obtained his bachelor's in Engineering Physics from the University of Saskatchewan and his master's and Ph.D. from INRS (U. du Quebec), both in Canada. He previously served as Department Head of Nuclear Science and Engineering and Director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, both at MIT. He co-founded Rutherford Energy Ventures with his MIT colleague Dr. Andrew W. Lo in 2024 to develop economic and investment tools for developing fusion energy.
