International Women in Engineering Day webinars for schools

Chat to our Engineers!

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2021, the Department of Engineering Science is hosting two 'Chat to our Engineers' webinars aimed specifically at school students interested in engineering.

Join either Dr Katherine Collett or Professor Cathy Ye in an exclusive webinar as they talk about their research, career and what it’s like to be an engineer.

The sessions are aimed at students in years 7-10 and years 11-13 respectively (see below for more information) and will be hosted by one of our Student Ambassadors.

Session details:

16:00-16:45 – for students in years 7-10

Dr Katherine Collett on “Net-zero: How can we engineers help to get there?”

We all know we need to reach net-zero to help tackle climate change, but what are the technical hurdles we need to overcome to make this a reality? Renewable energy is great, but what about transport and heating? How can we create low-carbon building materials and reduce emissions from food? And what about low income countries where solutions need to be affordable and context appropriate? These are a few of the topics Katherine will discuss with you during her talk, and as future engineers you might be the ones finding the answers.

17:00-18:00 – for students in years 11-13

Professor Cathy Ye on “Stem cells and engineering – what’s the link?”

Professor Ye is a chemical engineer working in the field of Regenerative Medicine at University of Oxford. She would like to share with you how she got into this research area and some of the exciting projects she has been working on.

About the Event

The event will be hosted on an online platform and will have a limited number of spaces available. Spaces will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis and joining instructions will be sent to all successful attendees a few days prior to the event taking place. Participants will need to have their parents/guardians’ permission to take part, and full safeguarding procedures will be followed during the event.
