Russell Buchanan

Russell Buchanan MSc

DPhil Student

Biography

Russell is originally from Montreal, Canada and received a BEng Honours in Electrical Engineering from McGill University. He completed his MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control at ETH Zurich with the thesis work done at the CSIRO Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group in Brisbane, Australia.

He is currently doing a DPhil at the University of Oxford under supervision of Dr. Maurice Fallon at the Oxford Robotics Institute.

Research Interests

Russell's research interests are in robust state estimation and localisation for legged robots using only proprioceptive sensing. This is done with a combination of graph-based optimisation and learning techniques. Using sensing modalities such as haptics, inertial sensing and torque encoders will enable robots to navigate in challenging environments such as underground mines and sewers.
